Summary

Republican legislators in 12 states have recently passed laws and regulations requiring Kindergarten-to-3rd Grade instruction in what is now called "the science of reading" — what we used to call phonics. This contrasts with the progressive doctrine of "balanced literacy" that focuses on the "love of reading and storytelling" and finding "context clues". Memphis-Shelby County, Tennessee — with a large percentage of economically-challenged families — has taken more radical action. They added "the science of reading" to every class in the high school curriculum. Will this reversion to the wayback machine of education rescue the millions of students who can't read proficiently, or even functionally? Scott Ott, Bill Whittle, and Stephen Green, have hosted multiple episodes of Right Angle each week since 2009, thanks to our Members and donors. 0:39.0

been through this training for a return to what we used to say back in the day, which was

sound it out, sound it out if you're trying to figure out what a word is. And so, but the interesting thing, gentlemen,

0:55.1

is not the K through three instruction in phonics.

The interesting thing is a school district in Shelby County

that has decided to incorporate phonics

in high school instruction in every class.

1:16.9

Every class begins with 15 minutes of breaking down words so that students can understand where they come from. And that includes biology class. You know,

1:24.3

that sounds like a burning ship to me, man. If you have to do that every class for 15, 15 minutes, that sounds like a problem area.

1:33.3

I learned, obviously I learned phonics and when I came to, I learned phonics in Bermuda in British

schools.

1:40.6

And when I came to America and found out that they weren't teaching it, I was genuinely

1:45.3

I was amazed.

1:46.8

It's like, what do you mean?

1:47.9

Well, we hold up a word, right?

1:49.7

And then we tell you what the word means and then you make the association.

1:52.9

So what you have to memorize the shape of this thing?

1:55.8

Is that what you're doing?

1:56.4

You must put a caterpillar up there or some other kind of hieroglyphics.

1:59.4

You're telling me that that's how it works.
