They then reversed course. So what happened? Well, this mid-cycle redistricting has now been moving through the Indiana State House for about the last week or so. Today, it hit the Senate Election Committee where they were debating |
| 0:37.9 | this for several hours. We heard from the public. People speaking in opposition to this. |
| 0:42.9 | Also people speaking in support of redistricting in Indiana. Last week, this passed out of the Indiana |
| 0:49.2 | House, and it passed with an overwhelming majority. And this new congressional map would redraw |
| 0:55.0 | the current Indiana map. |
| 0:56.2 | Right now, the Indiana state delegation |
| 0:59.0 | is made up of seven Republicans, |
| 1:01.1 | two Democrats who represent them in Congress. |
| 1:04.5 | This redrawing of the map would redraw it |
| 1:08.2 | so that it would be nine likely Republican districts and no Democratic districts. |
| 1:13.4 | And the way that this would happen is dividing Indianapolis, the capital city, into four of |
| 1:19.5 | these different districts. So diluting some of their voting power there. I spoke with the former |
| 1:24.2 | Republican mayor of Indianapolis, Greg Ballard, on the phone last week. |
| 1:28.8 | He said to me he's opposed to this. |
| 1:31.0 | He also thinks it's a bad idea because it will fray the community there and dilute the voting power of the folks in Indianapolis. |
