If you've ever owned or seen a dog who suffers from separation anxiety, you know how heartbreaking that can be. I'm sharing a 10-step protocol that will turn the dog training world on its head because it's like nothing that is out there for separation anxiety help. It's the FRIDA Protocol created by two of my European students, who are amazing dog trainers, Nadine Hehli and Simone Fasel, to help their rescue dog Frida with her extreme separation anxiety. The protocol is now helping many more dogs, and I'm bringing you the steps to overcoming canine separation anxiety for our special 200th episode of Shaped by Dog.
In the episode you'll hear:
• A case study of Nadine and Simone's rescue dog, Frida, who overcame severe separation anxiety.
• Why typical approaches to separation anxiety don't work for extreme cases.
• The 10 steps of the FRIDA Protocol to help dogs with separation anxiety.
• What equipment you'll need to get started, including a snuffle mat and remote feeder.
• The foundations for success with the FRIDA Protocol.
• Why functional relaxation to create calm for dogs is a critical component.
• Reminders about the body language of calm dogs vs. anxious dogs.
• When and how to introduce remote feeders and WiFi cameras to work through separation anxiety.
• How to begin fading in barriers that allow the dog freedom of movement in their "Fortress of Calm".
• When to introduce "Hidden Treasures" for your dog.
• Why remote feeders aren't babysitters.
• When and how to leave your dog home alone for the first time.
• How to create calm relaxation for your dog in other places like the car.

0:30.1 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. |
0:33.8 | Welcome to our 200th episode of Shape by Dog. |
0:37.3 | And I just want to give a shout out to every one of you who have listened to our podcast. |
0:45.2 | And thank you from my entire team for supporting our podcast and helping us get to this 200th episode. And what an episode it is. I'm going to share a case study. I'm going to introduce you |
0:50.6 | to two students of mine. Now, I may be a little bit biased, but I think these two |
0:56.8 | young ladies are the up and coming in the space of dog training in Europe. And they cover so |
1:03.6 | many areas, both of pet dog ownership, of behavior and of sport. I first met Nadine Hill when I was |
1:10.2 | teaching a seminar in Europe, |
1:11.9 | and she came over on a mentorship three times from Europe to work with me. Now, Nadine's partner, |
1:18.6 | Simone Fizel, has a special interest in behavior. She studied behavior after she graduated from |
1:25.3 | university and together, they are like a powerhouse of |
1:30.0 | dog training expertise. And I'm proud to call them my students. Now, the two of them adopted a dog last |

1:48.9 | on top of being a very active hyper dog. Now, for whatever reason, the dog attached itself |
1:56.4 | to Nadine more so than Simone. So Nadine could not even leave the room or the dog would |
2:02.9 | scream and claw and urinate, even if Simone and the other dogs were in the room. That's |
2:09.1 | how severe separation anxiety can be. It is real. And unfortunately, for the people who have |
2:15.7 | it, there's often some guilt or shame that they've done |
2:19.7 | something. You know what? Sometimes, guys, it just happens. But after today's podcast, you're |
