There was an imminent attack. The orchestrated, the primary motivator for the attack was

Kossum Sulemani. The attempt to disrupt that plot. You all have been talking this morning about

the history of who Kossum Sulemani is. He's got hundreds of American lives blood on his hands.

But what was sitting before us was his travels throughout the region and his efforts to make

a significant strike against Americans that would have been many Muslims killed as well,

Iraqis, people in other countries as well.

That was Secretary of State Mike Pompeo describing the justification for President Trump's

extraordinary decision to launch a U.S. drone strike that targeted and killed

Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander General Kossum Sulemani.

It was an action that immediately threatened to dramatically escalate tensions in the

Middle East. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khmani vowed a, quote,

forceful revenge against what he called the criminals who have Sulemani's blood and the blood

of the other martyrs on their hands. As he made those comments, the Pentagon revealed it is

rushing thousands of fresh U.S. troops to the region. What do we know about the intelligence that

prompted Trump to pull the trigger on Sulemani? And how closer are we to an actual war with Iran?
