Yuleana Kopka was born in Lima, Peru in 1954. Her parents Maria and Hans Wilhelm Kupka, were both of German descent and academics in the field of zoology.

The research had often taken them to faraway exotic lands, with young Yuleana tagging along.

Their dream had been to set up a biological research station in the Amazon rainforest to study the

creatures that flourished inside and in 1968

they took their first steps to make it happen as Hans and Maria both researched jungle

mammals and fauna in their respective careers.

They decided to relocate their workstation to the Amazon Rainforest.
