When all the participants consumed a 20 gram serving of protein, that those that consumed two or three times the RDA were able to respond to that amount of protein

0:23.3

and increase muscle protein synthesis, whereas those that consumed the RDA for protein,

0:28.4

you're not able to increase their right of muscle protein synthesis in response to the 20-gram

0:32.7

protein meal. So it's been hypothesized that by having a slightly higher protein intake, you may preserve some of that sensitivity to food intake.

0:43.5

And that isn't the case with a lower protein diet. Hello and welcome to Sigma Nutrition Radio, the podcast that brings you weekly in-depth discussions

with some of the brightest minds involved in evidence-based nutrition research and its application.

2:35.5

Maybe to get us started, could you maybe talk us through a bit about your academic background

2:40.6

and the work and the research you've been up to over the past number of years at McMaster

2:46.3

and what you're kind of been looking at?

2:48.6

So the last four years over in Stude's lab, my research is focused on how we can use

2:54.4

nutrition and exercise strategies to maximize rates of muscle protein synthesis in older adults.

3:00.5

Because we know that from about the fifth decade of life, muscle mass and function tends

3:04.8

to decline.

3:06.1

So we are looking at ways to either prevent or to slow the loss of that muscle mass. So my studies specifically have focused on the pattern of protein intake throughout the day. So we know that how people typically consume their protein is in a skewed manner. So small amounts of protein at breakfast and lunch, let's say you have a bowl of cereal
