I remember reading this report in science or Discover, I think, that's always stuck with me.

It was a report about the slow, lurching discovery of a public health crisis around the eastern seaboard

in the early 90s. It was, as I recalled it, a perfect story for the constant.

So I started researching, and pretty quickly I realized that the story, as I remembered it,

was not the story, not the whole story at least. There were claims and counterclaims,

scientists accusing other scientists of screwing up and those scientists accusing the ones

who accused them of being in the can for corrupt interests, and, boy, it was exciting.

This little story I half remembered was turning out to be a big, huge, sprawling epic.
