I first got the idea to do this episode through self-reflection.

When I was a teenager, my family and I took one of many trips up to Alaska,

where my grandfather was a lifelong bush pilot,

not counting a couple of interruptions to fly in World War II and to have a career as a 747 captain for American Airlines.
