Summary

The Bafta Television Craft Awards get dished out tonight, so Hannah's been on the Zoom with Nancy Harris, one of the nominees in the Best Writer (Comedy) category, to talk about her excellent comedy drama, The Dry, which struggled to find a home for eight years and is now available to watch on ITVX. They chat about why alcohol is such a fascinating but difficult topic to write about, dealing with high drama in a low-drama way and how Irish women are all over it when it comes to comedy writing in the UK.  Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hello, Hannah here, and welcome to this week's Sunday Chopps. Tonight, that's Sunday the 23rd

0:21.0

of April, if you're listening to this on Day of Release, the BAFTA television craft awards

0:26.3

are dished out. And in this Chopps, I'm talking to one of the nominees in the writing for comedy

0:31.3

category, Nancy Harris. Nancy is a playwright and now scream writer, originally from Dublin,

0:37.6

now based in London, and her excellent series The Dry was made by RTE and Britbox, and is now

0:44.6

available to watch on ITVX. And I absolutely suggest you do, not least because this interview

0:50.9

may be a bit spoilery for your liking otherwise. The Dry tells the story of Shiv played by

0:56.8

Rushing Gallagher, who leaves London to go back to Dublin when her grandmother dies, and then

1:01.8

announces she's staying with her family because she's been struggling to stay sober for six months

1:06.6

and thinks that they can help her. Reader, whether they can or indeed want to, is explored over

1:12.7

the next eight episodes and it's a rather wonderful slice of television. Take that from someone

1:17.9

who knows more than they'd like to about having alcoholics in the family. I wish Nancy

1:23.1

all the best of luck in tonight's awards and one last reminder, the following interview contains

1:29.4

spoilers. Hello and welcome to standard issue Nancy Harris. Thank you so much for joining us.

1:39.7

I want to start by saying, big congratulations, just got a BAFTA nomination in the best writer for

1:45.9

comedy category. How does that feel? Like mind blowing, to be honest, I didn't expect it at all

1:51.9

because the show has had quite a low profile in a way. Here it was on Britbox and it's an Irish

1:58.6

made show and you know Britbox and RT in the Irish channel. And I don't know, I just didn't

2:04.7

expect it. I didn't know that it had had that impact. So it's really, it's just lovely. It's so

2:09.8

it's so wonderful and thrilled. Yeah, without wanting to do Britbox down, obviously.

2:15.0

You know, BBC and Channel 4 tends to dominate those categories year after year after year.

2:20.8

So I was delighted when I saw that you were on there, but I had to say I was a little bit surprised
