How the patriarchy uses women's trauma against them. I mean, what a title.

And what a book, an uncompromising challenge to the psychiatric labelling and medicalisation of women and girls.

Now, challenging contemporary psychiatry, which sees and sells itself as a force for good, is a bold move.

But there is good reason for Jess's interrogation of a medical institution that has a long-gold history of pathologising and sexualising women and girls.

As the always excellent journalist Victoria Smith said in a recent piece for the critic,

no one is ever in any doubt about psychiatry's shameful past.

Father's institutionalising way would daughters, husbands locking up inconvenient wives, brains destroyed for being too female, too black, too gay.

And while we're told to think about those errors as something very much in the past, a little thinking shows, well, not so much really,

we might not have lobotomies anymore, thank goodness.

But we do have high strength medications that perform pretty much the same function.

It's a complicated and emotional subject with a lot of people invested in maintaining the status quo.
