This is the third of our sidetrack episodes, where we take a closer look at some fascinating characters, events, and anything else that is interesting, but is somewhat tangential to the direct story of the popes of Rome we explore in the main episodes. Deonisius of Alexandria has one such character.

He is, in a way, central to the story of Christianity in the mid-200sD., and he always seems to come in and out of the

story of the popes of Rome. Deionysius was involved with two of the major persecutions of the

mid-200s A.D., namely the persecutions of DeC.s. and Valerionisius played a significant role in growing Christianity after

these persecutions and the calamitous fallout from these persecutions. A great number of Deonisius's

letters and writing still exist today, which is exciting because we can read what the man actually wrote and what he was

thinking about during this very exciting time. The early life of Dionysius is somewhat obscured by the

mists of time, but we do know that he was born to a wealthy non-Christian family in Alexandria.

The biography of Dionysius is similar in many ways to his contemporary, Cyprian of Carthage.

Both were very highly educated, wealthy, and for some reason unknown to us, converted to Christianity later in life.

Dionysius would become Pope or patriarch of Alexandria in 249 in life. Deionysius would become Pope or Patriarch of Alexandria in 249 AD, succeeding the very important and popular Heraclus as Pope. For those who are paying attention, and I know you are, you'll notice I've been referring to these leaders as Pope.
