Summary

Gavin has a unique perspective on politics, government and the Conservative Party having served as both an MP and the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff. Unusually he was an MP first, but having lost his seat in 2017, was hired by Theresa May to be her most senior adviser. Gavin takes us inside the Brexit negotiations, with some surprising insights on some of Europe's major players. It's also a defence of Theresa May and the values of public service and how she contrasts with some of her successors...

Hello and welcome to the political party. Today's guest is Gavin Barwell,

0:12.8

Theresa May's former chief of staff. He was a Tory MP before that,

0:15.8

was a Tory adviser before that. So he has a unique perspective on government politics,

0:20.8

but particularly what's happening to the Tory party. But there's so many great stories

0:25.6

in here about how number 10 runs, how it should run, inside the Brexit negotiations.

0:31.2

It's great. I'm reading his book at the moment, Chief of Staff. And I just thought,

0:36.0

I mean, obviously I've wanted to get him on for a while, but I need to get him on because

0:39.8

particularly at the moment when there's been a lot of changes at the end of maybe even more to come

0:44.6

in the next couple of years, what a brilliant perspective he's got. And it's very rare. I mean,

0:49.5

obviously sometimes advisors become politicians, but he wasn't advisor first, but for MP to then

0:54.8

become chief of staff. I don't think that's ever happened before. So he's just got a great view

1:00.1

of politics and he explains politics in a really clear way. And of course, has his own ideology and

1:07.2

his own principles and values, but is a great, dispassionate commentator on what's happening. And

1:14.9

the stuff about Boris Johnson is absolutely great as well. Before that, I've got some updates on

1:19.5

some future shows. So I've got some more guest book for the coming weeks. Now, the next show,

1:24.4

on Monday, the 7th November is with David Dimbleby, Titan of British broadcasting. You think of all

1:29.6

those election nights, episode of Question Time, a lot to talk to him about. On the 14th of November,

1:36.2

was meant to be Matt Hancock. You may have seen that Matt Hancock will not be at the Dutchess

1:40.7

there, so on the 14th, because he won't be in Britain on the 14th, because he will be in the jungle

1:46.1

doing I'm a celebrity. So I'm delighted to announce that replacing him on the 14th of November

1:52.4

is Jake Berry. Until recently, the chairman of the Conservative Party, and you may have seen his

1:58.5

interview that revealed that Sir Ella Bravaman had breached national security. So,
