That's the conclusion of a research review in Jama Network Open.

The authors wanted to know whether the use of face masks could reduce transmission of respiratory pathogens during the next pandemic.

They reviewed the evidence that has been collected over the last three years of COVID-19.

Masks alone are not adequate, but consistent use of high quality well-fitting masks can make a difference.

The investigators conclude.

Available evidence strongly suggests that masking in the community can reduce the spread of SARS-Cove 2 and that masking with the highest quality masks that can be made widely available should play an important role in controlling

whatever pandemic caused by a respiratory pathogen awaits us.
