I'm Ellie Corthorn. In 1597, the Dutch explorer William Barrens and his crew of 15 set sail on a

quest to find the northeast passage to China. But when their ship became stranded in the ice,

they were forced to spend nine months fighting off ravenous polar bears, extreme cold,

and a seemingly endless winter. It's a remarkable story of survival in the harshest of conditions,

and the subject of journalist Andrea Pitzers' new book, Ice Bound,

Shipwrecked at the edge of the world. Andrea was joined in conversation by a digital section editor,

Rachel Denning. They discussed Barrens III remarkable Arctic expeditions,

covering everything from mutiny and mass-repairing to what happens when you're stranded in a corner
