In the previous chapters we learned of the dismal fate of John and Lucy Ferrier.

After escaping from Salt Lake City in the dead of night, guided through the mountains by Lucy's sweetheart, Jefferson

Hope.

John and Lucy almost seemed safe, but were sadly caught by their pursuers, Dreber and Stranderson.

Vowing vengeance against them both, Jefferson spent the rest of his days tracking the pair down, who had escaped to Europe after

disagreements with the Mormon community.

Bringing us neatly up to the last events recounted by Dr Watson, having just apprehended

Jefferson Hope with Sherlock and the detectives.
