Summary

In this raw and powerful coaching moment, Kim Constable tackles a listener’s question about self-sabotage—and delivers a truth bomb that could change everything. If you’ve ever felt like you were doing great with your diet or training, only to fall off track the moment people start noticing your results, this episode will hit home. Kim unpacks why self-sabotage isn’t something that happens to you, but rather a series of conscious or unconscious decisions that you choose in the moment. You’ll learn: Why “falling off track” is not failure—it's just one choice How to shift from victim mindset to radical self-responsibility The real reason praise or progress might trigger your urge to quit Why reframing every moment as a decision puts the power back in your hands How childhood patterns of punishment and shame affect your adult behavior The one mindset shift that can permanently break your sabotage cycle This isn’t just about weight loss. It’s about taking back control of your life—one decision at a time. Keywords: self-sabotage help, stop self-sabotage, weight loss mindset, personal accountability, emotional eating triggers, midlife transformation, perimenopause weight loss, radical responsibility, how to build self-trust, Kim Constable podcast

Okay, Michelle R. Cook, I need help with self-sabotage. I'm good most of the time, but when I fall, I fall, and it's always when other people start to notice.

0:10.1

So, Michelle, what do you mean by that? Do you mean like it's always when people start to notice that you're doing well?

0:16.2

And it's going to assume that that's what you mean. People start noticing your results and then that's when

0:20.8

you effectively let yourself off the hook. This one's a kind of a hard one to answer. So I'll just

0:25.4

give you my experience of, my experience, I guess, of self-sabotage and what this is for me. So the thing

0:35.2

you have to remember about self-sabotage is self-sabotage is a choice. Okay. So it's not something that happens that's kind of outside

0:43.1

of yourself. I think that a lot of times we put self-sabotage down to, oh my God, like I totally

0:48.2

just self-sabotage as if this self-sabotage thing is something that happens to us that isn't a choice

0:54.0

that we made. And one of the

0:56.2

first steps of overcoming self-sabotage is to recognize that you are choosing in every single moment.

1:03.3

You are choosing to stay on your diet or you're choosing to go off your diet. So being on a diet isn't like kind of a long-term thing. Being on a diet or being on a fitness program is a moment-to-moment choice. So it's like, in this moment, I'm going to choose to work out. In this moment, I'm going to choose to not eat this thing and eat that. In this moment, I'm then going to choose this. So every single day, you're making choices. You're making choices for breakfast, choices for snacks, choices for lunch, choices for dinner, choices for snacks. You're making

1:32.0

choices whenever you're in work and food is presented that is not on plan. You're making choices to

1:36.7

pick up that chocolate and put it in your mouth or to ignore the chocolate. Self-sabotage is not

1:40.9

something that happens to you and it's not this great big thing that kind of slams upon

1:47.1

you. It's like something happens where you make a decision and then after you've made that

1:53.4

decision, you decide to stop your diet. And that's really all it is. And I think it's really

1:58.6

important to reframe this away from, oh my God, I don't know what happens. I just self-sabotage. You know, it's really all it is. And I think it's really important to reframe this away from,

2:01.1

oh my God, I don't know what happens. I just self-sabotage. You know, it's like, is it somehow as if you're not in control? Like, you are in control. You've just, some, you just made a decision. So, so let's say somebody knows. So someone goes, oh, my God, Michelle, you're doing, look at you, you look amazing, you've lost so much weight. That triggers something inside of you

2:20.7

for you to decide. goes, oh my God, Michelle, you're doing, look at you, you look amazing, you've lost so much weight.

2:18.1

That triggers something inside of you for you to decide that it's either okay for you to stop your diet,

2:25.1

or maybe it triggers a fear in you, which, oh my God, like, I actually don't want people to notice me.

2:30.7

And so therefore I'm going to, I'm going to go back to being the way I was when
