Gordon and Derek finally managed to get into the house. They knew something strange was going on.

The lights were off and the curtains were drawn. Gordon's fiance wasn't the sort of person to just disappear, nor was her father Matthew.

In the darkness searching for the light switch, Gordon and Derek noticed something strange on Matthew's favourite armchair.

It was a deep red stain. When they drew the curtains and light flooded the room, it was then they began to question whether Matthew and Alison were still alive.

Matthew's mum was in his early 60s. He had lost his wife to cancer two years earlier.

The partially sighted pensioner would later be described in court as very gentle and very kind.

It seems retired from his job where he had worked as a bank messenger in charge of caching paper assets.

He lived in old-asi gardens in Barking East London. Matthew man wearing had two adult children. His son Mark in his mid-20s was an officer in the Royal Air Force,

working away in Cyprus. Mark's younger sister Alison still lived with her father, however she was due to be married.

With her birthday approaching, she was soon to be moving in with her fiance Gordon-Heelis in just a week's time.

Although Matthew's son Mark was out of the country, he wanted to sell his Ford Escort car.

At the time, Thursday April 23rd 1992, the internet was at least a decade away from being widely used, so Mark put an advert in a local newspaper, the new and recorder.

His father agreed to speak with anyone that was interested. He had read,

XR3I Cabriolay, G-REG, stunning red, all electronics with cause-worth alloys and expensive alarm, low mileage, just serviced,

priced to sell at £7,750 or nearest offer.

The very same day the advert was published. Matthew received a call from a Mr. Sin Claire inquiring about the car. He was very interested.

After the young man on the other end of the line was given the address, he said he would be popping round the next morning.

At night, Matthew man wearing had prepared everything he needed for a day's fishing.

After a good night's sleep, he was going to be up early to visit his brother Derek who lived in Hornsearch.
