So this week I had to go back and look, when was the last time I spent any one-on-one moments with Robert Griffin, the third, RG3, during his time in the Washington franchise.

0:49.0

And checking some old notes, it was the summer of 2015, and from what I wrote, I clearly was under the impression that Griffin was hanging by a threatened organization.

0:58.0

Reviewing everything I'd written about that trip, I remembered spending some one-on-one time with him, and as I left the field, a long time team staffer stopped me and kind of gave me a side I look, and then asked me, so what do you say this time?

1:11.0

Which probably isn't the greatest thing for a starting quarterback in an organization.

1:17.0

Now, when I left that stop, I remembered thinking, I couldn't believe how bad it had gotten for RG3 and Washington.

1:25.0

It was toxic, so much so that I remembered a staffer once telling me a weird story about his mother doing his braids once in between practices, like that showcase what a diva he was.

1:37.0

I mean, it was a lot, a lot of mess, really.

1:41.0

If you told me right then, someday this guy's going to write a book about this organization, and he's going to clear the air about a lot of things, I absolutely would have believed it.

1:50.0

And well, we've arrived there with Griffin announcing a forthcoming book next summer called Surviving Washington, and it's going to deal with his experiences inside that franchise.

2:00.0

Now, some of it I can guess at. I'd heard enough stories about a terribly awkward quarterback room between Griffin, Kirk Cousins, and Colt McCoy.

2:09.0

I knew there was no shortage of friction with coaches like Mike and Kyle Shanahan, and eventually Jay Grewden as well.

2:16.0

And even around the time I might visit with him, I remembered Mike Shanahan had basically come out and said after his departure from Washington that Griffin simply never learned to play quarterback in the NFL.

2:27.0

And Jay Grewden at that point was taking some pretty clear shots at him publicly.

2:31.0

None of which spoke to what I had always heard almost every time I'd gone through Washington while Griffin was there about Snyder really coddling him and treating him like royalty, even when it was becoming clear he wasn't going to be the team starting quarterback.

2:45.0

And from a more personal perspective, I had written in my notes about a conversation with offensive tackle Trent Williams on that visit in the summer of 2015, where he kept talking about RG3 settling in as a person and just being comfortable with himself.

3:01.0

Which now that I look back at it might have actually been a little more suggestive than just being about football.

3:07.0

Regardless, I would have known then that all of this would make an interesting book.
