Hi, I'm Rachel Stewart and thanks for choosing to listen to the Scotland Outdoors podcast.

Now when was the last time you bought a Scottish cashmere jumper or scarf?

Well the chances are if it was purchased within the last 30 years, it will have been processed here,

but the fibres used to create it from cashmere goats will more than

likely have been imported from Asia. Gillian McEwen and her husband are hoping to revive the industry

here. They're rearing the UK's largest herd of cashmere goats to produce what they describe as genuine Scottish cashmere. That's grown,

harvested and processed in Scotland. I met Gillian at our farm in Angus. So we're surrounded by

pens filled up with goats who have just had kids. So there's lots of mothers

proudly displaying their newborn kids. So we've got over 150 kids here and they're all wearing

their lovely hand knitted goat coats, which is a different story completely.

We'll come to that.

Yeah, so this is the time of year where we would be kidding our goats.

We've got a herd of over 120 goats here at Linen Bay, and we bring them in in January time,

and we're kidding until probably about Easter time, where they'll'll be all inside and we can keep a watchful eye over them to allow them to kids so we're almost at the last stages now

so we've got one mum left to kids she's really holding on she's been sitting like this for a couple of

weeks but everyone else all the other momsums have kidded and we've got

communal goat playgrounds I suppose you would call them full of kids bouncing about with things
