33:00 The story to watch: Why multiple roads lead to Iran.

  • Navy SEALS board a ship transporting Iranian weapons to the Houthis; two operators go missing at sea.
  • Hamas: a designated terrorist group backed by Iran launched a terrorist attack in Israel, a key American ally.
  • Hezbollah: terrorist group backed by Iran fires on Israel, responding to Israel's war with Hamas.
  • Houthi: formerly designated terrorist group backed by Iran, harrasses ships in solidarity with Hamas.
  • Iranian-backed militia attack U.S. positions in Iraq, Syria more than 130 times in the last several weeks after Hamas launched a terrorist attack.

Some have warned of a regional conflict – but has one already started?

How could this story change the image of American leadership for U.S. voters?

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Scoop, where you get the scoop on this week's news. My name is Jenna,

0:08.2

and this is Smarter News. And I'm really excited to see you today, which is a big day when we look at

0:14.5

the news cycle in general, because before when we were talking about the 2024 election,

0:19.3

we really didn't have anything. We just had

0:21.3

prognostication. We had forecasting. We had polling. Now we actually have results. And so we're

0:26.6

going to take a little time to focus on what happened in the Iowa caucuses last night. It is Tuesday.

0:32.1

Our regular scoop day is on Monday. It's about 20 degrees here in Texas. It was below freezing in Iowa, by the way, last night.

0:40.3

It didn't seem to affect turnout very much at all. And as I was preparing for this broadcast,

0:45.0

I was hearing this strange sort of whipping noise outside of my office here. And I couldn't

0:50.8

figure out what is that noise. It's going to get really distracting. It's loud. it's a straight. It's a very specific sound. And what I realize, so apropos,

1:00.1

it was the whipping of the American flag outside our house because of the windshield in Texas.

1:05.9

So I don't know if that's symbolic, if that's giving us the background, sort of motivation

1:10.2

and color that we need

1:11.5

for this conversation. But with the whipping American flag in the background, we're going to talk

1:16.1

a little bit about U.S. politics. Why does Iowa matter? Iowa matters because it's the first

1:21.8

contest in an election season. It is a very specific contest, which we're going to talk a little bit about

1:28.0

what makes the caucus different than a primary, albeit not much when you take a step back and look

1:32.8

at the broader story. But one of the reasons why Iowa matters is that we start sifting through

1:38.4

candidates. You see certain candidates rise. You see other candidates fall. And so last night,

1:43.2

late last night, in fact,

1:44.5

we got this information from one of the candidates that's really absorbed a lot of attention

1:50.0

in this race. And let me go ahead and play this for you. This is a campaign founded on

...
