Hi, everybody. Welcome to Scoop where you get the scoop on this week's news. My name is Jenna,

and this is Smarter News. And we have such an interesting intersection between a top national news story

and a really significant historic event that just happens to be happening this week that will mark. And what I'm talking

about, the top story that I'm talking about has to do with some comments made by some of the

presidents of the most prestigious schools in America in congressional testimony last week

and the events that have happened after that. If you haven't been caught up on

this, don't worry, I'm going to play some of the sound for you. We're going to walk through it

together. So we'll get all caught up. And one of the storylines, there's a lot of storylines that are

coming from this. There's a lot of different conversations that are coming from this particular

event that happened last Tuesday that has, again, ignited a series of events over the last week.

But one of the storylines we're really going to pull on, the threads of this story, include a question about free speech and the First Amendment, and what does that mean in America?

And ironically, on Friday, we're marking the anniversary of the passing of the Bill of Rights.

And the Bill of Rights is what is really detailing for the American people when it was passed.

What are our rights as Americans?

What makes America unique?

If the Constitution set up the structure of government, the Bill of Rights is what the American citizens are essentially owed. What we hold dear. The First Amendment

includes freedom of speech, freedom of press. Something we talk about a lot since our founding

and has come up repeatedly in a lot of different news stories and controversies since then. Every

generation confines a lot of questions about what this means in modern American society for them.

And we have a very interesting question ahead of us today about, well, what exactly does the First Amendment protect?

And if you stand up for free speech, what exactly does that look like?
