Well, per Aria Bendix and NBC News, researchers at Northwestern Medicine and Brigham and Women's Hospital say they've discovered a root cause of the

autoimmune disease lupus, a disease that affects hundreds of thousands of people in the

United States. The disease itself is one in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks

healthy tissue in many parts of the body. Scientists have long suspected that a person's genetics

or hormones may predispose them to

lupus and that the disease may be triggered by environmental factors like a previous

viral infection or exposure to certain chemicals.

But a new study published last week in the journal Nature outlines a clear pathway for how

the disease likely develops, pointing to abnormalities in the immune

system of people with lupus.
