My name is Drew Markwart and this is a script notes sidecast, a short episode about a timely

topic. Today that timely topic is the pattern of demands, part of the upcoming double-jade

contract negotiations. It was emailed out to members this afternoon and it's already

been printed in the trade so I thought you and I drew would talk through it, define

some terms and figure out what happens next. Sounds great. So I'm on the Negotiating

Committee but this is not me advocating for anything. This is a classic John in explainer

mode. It's Drew will get to know really well. And here's what I need to say if you're

not a double-j member or if you're not really interested in double-j stuff, you can absolutely

safely skip this episode. I promise this will not be on the exam. Drew, how should we get

started? I thought we might just go through this point by point because there are definitely

words in here that are English that I think I understand but I'm probably missing something

because I don't know what they mean in this context. Yeah, and context is really important

here. So you should understand first that the pattern demands is something the guild is

legally required to put out. It's a way of saying quote, these are the broad topics

we're intended to negotiate. Here's a scripted analogy I'm going to try on you. So the

pattern demands is sort of like a Disney characters I want song. And so we discussed

those on the show a lot. It's talking about what the guild wants to achieve but it's

not specific about how they intend to do it. Those how details, some of those are laid

out in member meetings and of course the wording of specific proposals and the contract language

you'd ultimately put in the NBA. That's way beyond what you see in the pattern demands.
