When your kid is gay and your kid wants to marry or your kid's family is vulnerable because

they're gay and can't marry.

Fuck you and your gay kid.

When my gay kid comes out, I'm for gay marriage.

When my husband has Alzheimer's disease and I'm Nancy Reagan.

Suddenly I'm for stem cell research.

When it was your husband with a disease that might be cured via stem cell research,

fuck you and your husband.

When you get addicted to drugs, fuck you and you should go to jail.

When I get addicted to drugs, I'm Rush Limbaugh.

Suddenly I'm for treatment over incarceration because my ass got addicted to drugs.

We talk about the empathy gap a lot, the failure of moral imagination, not part of so many

conservatives and Republicans,

that they can't see their shared humanity in others who are in different circumstances,

whether we're talking about queer people, whether we're talking about immigrants documented,

undocumented, whether we're talking about the people suffering in Puerto Rico right now, the empathy gap, the failure of moral imagination.

And I have railed against Republicans for that empathy gap, for that failure of moral imagination,

for their failure, their inability, their seeming inability to see what they have in common
