Whenever someone on television or elsewhere makes an overly broad generalization about Islamic cultures, societies, nations like, say, Saudi Arabia, the nation Donald Trump visited over the weekend, a nation where women are enslaved,

gays are beheaded, and petty crime is punished with amputations, a nation that has used its

oil wealth to push its murderously conservative brand of Islam all over the world. Whenever

someone does that makes a kind of broad generalization about Islam. Someone else, a good lefty, usually,

will immediately point to Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation on earth and an officially

secular state as proof that the Muslim world, 1.6 billion people, is vast and not a monolith. And

the Muslim world, you know what? It is vast. And it isn't a monolith. And there Muslim world, you know what? It is vast and it isn't a monolith. And there are

millions and millions of liberal and progressive Muslims out there, devout, lapsed, and X,

who support the separation of church and state, the rights of women, the right to free speech,

including blasphemous speech, which is, of course, a highly subjective fucking judgment call, so best leave sorting

that blasphemy shit out to a higher and most likely imaginary power.

But it looks like we're going to have to stop citing Indonesia as the counter example to

Saudi Arabia.

Because in March, two gay men, a 23-year-old and his 20-year-old boyfriend, were arrested

in Indonesia after their neighbors who had been spying on them for weeks or months burst into their apartment.

Neighborhood vigilantes suspected them of being gay, reported the Guardian, and set out to catch them having sex.

Mobile phone footage that circulated online and forms part of the evidence against the men,

shows them naked and visibly distressed, as one apparently calls for help on his cell phone.

The second man is repeatedly pushed by another man who is preventing the couple from leaving the room.
