Summary

Saul Leiter was one of the greatest undiscovered photographers of the 20th century. Working in New York as a fashion photographer, Saul Leiter amassed an amazing collection of personal work that came to the attention of Howard Greenberg in the 2000's. Before Saul's death - the release of "Early Color" changed Saul's career finally bringing the attention and praise he long deserved. Last year Greenberg/Steidl released a 2 volume book set called "Early Black and White". Divided into 2 volumes (I. Interior and II. Exterior), the portfolio shows a much different side of Saul. The images are just as beautiful as the Early Color work, but they are made with a completely different approach. In some ways they could have been done by a completely different photographer, but there's a hallmark of the style that is obviously classic Saul Leiter. The impressive part is that Saul treated black and white vs color as 2 different mediums. Much like an artist who paints and sculpts, the respect for these 2 "mediums" speaks to Saul's passion and respect for photography as well as his extraordinary talent as an artist. Hey everybody, Ted Forbes.

Welcome back to the art of photography.

0:02.9

In this video, I want to explore some of the early black and white work of

0:05.8

Saul Lighter.

0:06.6

I've talked about Saul before on the show, and he's a photographer who's

0:09.4

been an enormous influence on me.

0:11.5

His work has an enormous impact I think on a lot of

0:13.7

photographers and he's probably best known for his early color work and the early

0:18.1

color work is completely different than what we're going to look at today.

0:20.9

I'm going to pull out a book that I got that was

0:23.8

published this year called Early Black and White. It's part of the whole series

0:27.3

that Early Color was from and you're going to see that the black and white work

0:30.5

is considerably different than what we are used to seeing with the

0:33.5

color work. The color work combines a wonderful sense of street

0:36.8

photography of New York City in the 1950s and 1960s with these wonderful deep

0:41.0

reds and oranges and occasionally blues and purples as well.

0:45.6

And there's also a layer of abstraction that comes with those where Saul would like shoot through

0:49.6

windows or he would catch reflections and he would add a layer of complexity into the work that he was doing.

0:54.8

The black and white work is kind of the opposite of all that and I think this speaks to the

0:59.1

talent level that Saul Lider was working on and speaks to his genius as an artist.

1:04.2

And so probably the best thing to do is come over and look at some images.

1:06.7

So without further ado, this is the black and white work of saw Lider.
