When I was a young boy, like all young boys, I had certain obsessions.

Dinosaurs, of course, but everyone gets obsessed by dinosaurs.

I was born in 1974, just at the early crest of the Save the Whales movement.

But my biggest obsession was probably the Titanic, and this is before the 1992 film,

even before the 1985 Discovery of the Wreck by Bob Ballard. I'm not quite sure where it came from. Maybe I saw the 1958 film A Night to Remember play on TV one night. I definitely saw the 1980 film

Raised the Titanic, and I know the Clive Custler novel that film was based on was on my parents'

bookshelf. I can still remember the cover art, but I don't know where the fascination really came

from. It was just something about that ship. It turns out I wasn't the only

one with Titanic fever. As a young girl, my wife was captivated by the doomed ship too. And then, of course,

James Cameron, Kate Winslet, and Leonardo DiCaprio came along, and the number of Titanic fanatics

swelled. So it's a good bet that some of you listening right now aren't just
