because sure I've had fun with a Ouija board. I've shivered at dark coincidences

But ghost stories are interesting because they're not just stories. They're parables.

They're oral tradition. They're folklore. They're anthropology. They're history.

And the more conflicted a society is, the more it must reckon with itself,

the deeper and darker its ghost stories. Which is why perhaps the American South has so many.

On today's Saturday, Mattenay, we're featuring an episode from the podcast Southern Gothic,

which looks at the maybe haunted remains of the Banded Muzzleum.

This stone tomb is the oldest surviving structure on Hilton Head Island,

but the family once interred inside is no longer there. A century of vandalism and theft has taken

its toll. And the only thing that remains is perhaps the angry and broken-hearted ghost of the
