Every decade we get a trial of the century. The math there doesn't work out does it, but I think that says something about our fascination with crime and punishment.

We're so hungry for what is fundamentally gossip with courtroom rules that we make it seem

ten times as important than it is.

And I'll admit I get sucked in too.

We've got a new podcast coming out at the end of the month called American Criminal.

So right now, working on the first season, I'm consumed by the trial of the Menendez brothers

who killed their parents in 1989. That trial opened on July 20th, 1993 and was an immediate media

sensation, the youth of the accused, the brutality of the killings, the wealth of

the family, all the contradictions, and whose testimony can you really believe.

But 100 years before, almost to the day in 1893,

there was another trial with all the same qualities, the youth of the accused, the brutality

of the killings, the wealth of the family, the contradictions.
