I have a good friend, a fellow podcaster, who hails from the deep wooded hollows of West Virginia.

And if you know one thing about West Virginia, well, it's probably that John Denver song country

roads, or a scurrilist stereotype of hillbilly country bumpkin life.

The unfair and improper characterization of Appalachian residents as HACI dimwits and uncultured

moon calves goes back a long while, as does the accusation that might explain such dimwitery

in breeding. My West Virginia friend, though, shows no sign of genetic impairment,

and I can tell you from personal experience that wheeling West Virginia is a delightful town,

full of friendly people. So, no, if you're looking for in-bred simpletons, please,

don't be disparaging of West Virginia. Instead, look to where we know there is plenty of
