Summary

Safe4RAIL-2 is a Europrean project aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of the European railway system. The project has three main objectives: to increase the accuracy of data management in the communication bus of the train; to develop wireless solutions in order to reduce on board wiring and to cut the development time of new applications for trains. In this episode we speak with Aitor Arriola, project coordinator from Ikerlan in Spain.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 826073. Hello and welcome. I'm your host, Peter Balland from Technicom. Safe for Rail 2 is a European

0:26.3

project aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of the European railway system. The project

0:32.4

has three main objectives. To increase the accuracy of data management in the communication bus of the train,

0:39.3

to develop wireless solutions in order to reduce onboard wiring, and to cut the development

0:44.5

time of new applications for trains. If this sounds like a lot, it is. But the Safe for Rail Consortium

0:51.9

is well-suited and well underway to improve the innovation and competitiveness of the European railway sector.

0:59.2

Today we speak with Aitor Airola from project partner Ikerlan in Spain.

1:03.9

He is the project coordinator, meaning his job is to make sure project objectives are met.

1:09.9

Thanks for joining us today, Aitor.

1:12.1

Thanks to you, Peter. We're here to discuss Safe for Rail 2 today, but we've previously done a

1:17.5

podcast on the Safe for Rail project. Tell us how these two projects are connected.

1:23.6

Yes, well, both projects belong to the shift to rail initiative of Horizon 2020,

1:29.3

and the goal of this initiative is to improve the railway research and innovation in Europe.

1:34.3

So C4L2 is a continuation of C4R1.

1:38.3

The main difference is that C4L1 was more based on requirements,

1:42.3

reference architectures and proof of concepts. And C4Rail was more based on requirements, reference architectures, and proof of concepts.

1:45.0

And C4Rail 2 is focused on building prototypes of these technologies and validating in real demonstrators.

1:52.0

So we can see that both projects are very much linked.

1:55.0

Okay, and it almost seems like from what you're saying that safer rail sort of paved the way for safer rail to

2:01.6

say for rail may have been a little more theoretical this safer rail two project is more
