Summary

The Schumacher brothers were at the top of the F1 mountain in the summer of 2001, and they arrived on home soil at the Nurburgring with Michael comfortably leading the championship, and Ralf having just taken the second win of his career and signing a big new contract with Williams. The scene was set for another Schumacher vs Schumacher contest when they shared the front row at the Nurburgring, but Ralf's day unravelled - first with a typical startline 'chop' from his brother, and then when Ralf became the first high-profile offender to cross the pit exit white line, earning him a drive-through penalty that led to him storming out of the track on Sunday night. Glenn Freeman is joined by Matt Beer and Edd Straw to revisit a memorable weekend for the Schumachers plus everything else that was going on in F1 at the time, including Jenson Button's Benetton struggles, Mika Hakkinen's lack of interest in helping David Coulthard, a bizarre CART vs F1 row, early tests of the HANS device, and two drivers signing contracts for 2002 that would not be honoured. while Ralph was hitting his stride at Williams, even managing to beat Big Brother in that year's Canadian Grand Prix.

So when they arrived on home soil at the Nureberg Ring, with Ralph having just signed a new contract extension at Williams,

the Schumackers were the talk of the F1 paddock, with everyone expecting a head-to-head battle

on the Sunday. In the end, it didn't quite play out that way. Ralph was put on high alert

0:49.7

by a classic start chop from Michael when the lights went out, and their nose to tail scrap came

0:55.0

to a premature end when Ralph was penalised for crossing the white line at the pit exit, a

transgression that Ferrari were believed to have flagged up to the FIA. So joining me, Glenn

Freeman, to talk quite a bit about the Schumackers, but also about everything else that was going

on in F1 during

the summer of 2001 on Matt Beer and Ed Straw. Matt, we'll come to you first. When you think

1:18.8

of the 2001 European Grand Prix at a Nurebergring, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

1:24.7

Okay, confession time. When you asked me to be on this episode, the first thing that

1:28.1

came to my mind was, oh yeah, that great no-burgering race where Montoya goes around the outside

1:32.4

of Schumacher and Schumacher spins, then Ferrari gets moaning about it. And then I realized about three

1:36.4

hours later, that was the 2003 European Grand Prix. So it was my first thought, but it was for the

wrong race. But it is a Montoya. When did you work out? You had it wrong? It was my first thought, but it was for the wrong race. But it is a Montoya. When did you work out?

1:44.8

You had it wrong?

1:45.7

It was quite quickly afterwards, actually.
