The first is that he has lost most of his sight to a degenerative retinal condition. The second is that he has let his situation embitter him to the world. One morning, Max stumbles across an account of another person with a similar vision issue, someone who has just had cutting edge surgery (pun very much intended) and has now regained his sight. Max, filled with sudden hope, reaches out to this person, unaware of the horror that he has already set into motion.
