Thucydides was an Athenian general born about in the middle of the 5th century B.C.E.

He came to prominence in the time of Pericles in Athens.

Athens was a sea power.

Vast fleets, first-rate fleets, very well done.

And they had a thing called the Delian League, which was an empire.

And they were brutal, if anybody dissented. Athens. I know famous for democracy and the various

philosophers, but it was a brutal sea power. Sparta, on the other hand, was a brutal land power.
