This is John Batchel, speaking to my colleague Charles Burton about Canadian citizens regard towards the People's Republic of China.

The outreach by the new Prime Minister, Mr. Carney, is one thing, but the public embracing China, knowing that it is non-transparent, that it is tyrannical, that it is abusive.

Why? How? There seems to be something to the idea that the U.S., represented by Mr. Trump's remarks these last months,

has pushed Canadian citizens into thinking of China as a possible future trade partner.

Is Charles to explain as best we can.

More to not.

Yes, it's catalyzed that, and it seems to strengthen the strategic hand

of co-opted elites in Canada and business elements

who do get benefits from the Chinese regime.

And it seems to be working in terms of convincing Canadian public opinion

that the greatest threat to Canada's United States and that China is a stable and more reliable partner that we should transfer over to.

I mean, this is just completely puzzling to me how the public has decided that China is a

better answer to Canada's political and economic future than our long-term ally, the United States.

But it does seem to be based on

disinformation, fomenting fear, and

the conspiracy of certain economic interests

to deceive the Canadian people into the direction

the country is taking.
