This is John Batchler, a conversation with colleague Caleb Weiss in Africa about an attack on Congo gold mines by an ISIS commander, violent ISIS

commander. Significant here is that these gold mines are in the possession of and exploited by

Chinese presence, Chinese workers, Chinese security.

This is the People's Republic of China in the Congo,

and yet attacked by ISIS and overrun by ISIS.

Yeah, so according to people that we've spoken to, including defectors from the group, the attack was most likely conducted by this guy named Ahmed Mahmoud Hassan, but he's better known the camps as Abu Akas. Like you said, he is a Tanzania national, but he is of Yemeni descent. So he claims both Arab lineage as well as hilly lineage.

But he is particularly violent.

He's probably the most violent commander in Ice Cap.

He also is notorious for using child soldiers.

That's sort of his thing.

It's really important because he's also sort of one of the main links with the Islamic State. He joined the group with his own prior connections to the

Islamic State. And we've actually written this, we being Bridgeway, we've had several reports

where we talked about his role. We wrote a report called Clerics in the Congo published by Hudson Institute.
