I'm John Batchelor. The conversation between the President of the United States and the General Secretary of NATO looks to have solved Greenland or has it.

Because Anatold, Levin, my colleague here, identifies Europe's sudden awareness that the U.S. is not trustworthy, reliable, certain, and that gives great pause to a guaranteed

force into Ukraine. What if the U.S. didn't show up would be the question.

Here's Anatole to explain after Davos.

Well, both, I think, and the fact that they're both in trouble is critical because, you

know, although Trump apparently has backed down, I mean, what all this has really done is

reinforced for European governments and publics, the image of Trump's unreliability and unpredictability.

Now, that could have a good effect because from what I'm told, people are really beginning to, in France and Britain, think twice about this idea of sending European troops to Ukraine,

both because the Russians have made clear that that is one of the two key issues that is

blocking a peace settlement for them. But also because as Stama and others have said,

such troops will be completely dependent on what he has called a US backstop.

And obviously, under Trump, no US backstop can be regarded as truly reliable.
