Welcoming my mentor and very good colleague, Gregory Copley, editor and publisher of Defense and Foreign Affairs,

the author of the new book, Noble State, about the success of constitutional monarchy.

We begin, however, with a hundred years ago or more, Teddy Roosevelt,

and the Monroe Doctrine of 200 years ago, James Monroe.

Monroe Doctrine is defined very straightforwardly as the United States foreign policy position

that opposes European colonialism. Leave it there.

The reason I bring up good American history of the Monroe Doctrine is that the national

security strategy issued by the Trump administration within these hours and delivered

in part by the Secretary of Defense several days past includes reference toes reference to the Monroe Doctrine and the Trump corollary of the Monroe Doctrine.

I point out that before there was a Trump corollary, there was a Roosevelt corollary.

That's the Venezuela crisis of 1902 and 1903.

The details are lost to history, but it involved European powers, Britain, Germany, and

Italy looking to collect their money from Venezuela and the Castro government at the time.

The question now is, what is to be done about the Trump corollary of the Monroe Doctrine,

with the gunboats arrayed off the shores of Venezuela,

with threats and counter threats being thrown around by Caracas and its travelers in Bogota

and elsewhere in South America, don't you dare invade us? And with the expectation that the national security strategy of the United States now includes

defense of all the Americas from interference by foreign powers, that would be Russian and China.
