senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, participating most recently in a conversation with a colleague

Brandis Keynes Rohn, the Greenberg Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Professor of Political

Science at Stanford,

the conversation about reclaiming liberal education in America, the presumption being that

it's lost. And Peter has helped me over these last years to understand as those who educate

and those who are in education understand what has been lost since the 20th century.

Peter, a very good evening to you.

When last we took up liberal education, we mourned the loss of the curriculum that you and I enjoyed in the 20th century.

Certainly, I was educated in the 50s and 60s and went to higher education in the 60s, in the mid-60s.

So my education is way out of date, 50, 60 years ago.

But I recognized none of the problems you've identified in liberal education today.

They just weren't there.

We had strict disciplinarians.

We had a curriculum that was fixed.

If you were going to be a liberal arts major in college, you took this.

If you were going for engineering, you took that.

All very prescribed, recommended, disciplined.

And now I understand, having had these conversations with you, that's gone.

Is there an explanation for why it's gone?

Did anybody sit down and say, here's what we're going to do and why?
