Summary

China's Floating Island, Metamaterials, and Polar AmbitionsBrandon Weichert, Gordon ChangBrandon Weichert discusses China developing an artificial floating island, potentially engineered to withstand nuclear detonation. He characterizes the platform as a next-generation man-made island designed for anti-access and area-denial capabilities. Weichert emphasizes that the core technology—metamaterials—holds critical applications for infrastructure in extreme polar environments, including the Arctic and Antarctic. Gordon Chang notes widespread pessimism in China regarding the prohibitive cost of such massive engineering projects.

This is CBS. I on the world. I'm John Batchel. I welcome Gordon Chang, my colleague and friend at Gordon G. Chang.

0:12.6

And we're going to Brandon Weicker to help us with a surprising headline from NDTV.

0:19.4

China building world's first artificial floating island that can survive nukes.

0:25.0

Brandon, I hold back a little bit on this because it reminds me of Dr. Strangelove.

0:31.0

But there's suddenly a floating island that can survive nukes gap.

0:36.4

What has created this gap? I understand it's ready for testing.

0:42.9

They emphasize science, but then again, there is that survive the nuke. What is it meant to do?

0:48.4

What's its mission that you can understand? Good evening to you, Brandon.

0:51.9

Good evening, John, and hello, Gordon. Thanks again for having me.

0:55.9

My thought on this is, first of all, it's a proof of concept. They might want to deploy these if they

1:03.9

can mass produce them quickly. They might want to deploy them in some of those gaps in the South China Sea

1:10.4

and or East China Sea where they're developing

1:13.4

a very robust line of anti-axis area denial capabilities, notably in those man-made

1:19.7

islands.

1:20.2

So this could kind of be the next generation man-made island.

1:23.6

And they're using metamaterials to build it.

1:26.3

Obviously, though, metamaterials might make it hard to destroy,

1:30.8

but the people can still probably get killed if there's people assigned to it.

1:35.6

But more importantly, I think as a proof of concept,

1:39.0

the use of the metamaterials is interesting,

1:41.8

because if they can design these things and show that they can withstand harsh environments,

1:46.3

you might have the basis of new infrastructure going up in the Arctic and in the Antarctic.
