In 2017, the Milakunas movie Bad Moms was released in theaters.

In this day and age, it's impossible to be a good mom.

Screw it.

It's be bad moms.

The movie was a comedic critique of the way we judge moms in society, setting impossible expectations for what a good mom should be and shaming women as bad moms when they inevitably fall short.

Beyond the movies, this trope of the bad mom, of course,

has real-world consequences, and one of them is how mothers are treated in courtrooms across the

country. According to the Innocence Project, quote, crimes involving female suspects tend to

receive more media spotlight than similar cases involving men, especially when the accusations against them involve children.

Media coverage of women suspected of harming children often weaponize as gender stereotypes, painting women as evil or bad mothers,

and portraying them as having fallen short of the traditional gender roles of gentle and nurturing mothers.

These biases can contribute to wrongful conviction.

Now, there's been no shortage of media coverage of the Amanda Lewis trial,

with much of it centered around Amanda being a supposed bad mom,

who was guilty of bad parenting as much as the death of her daughter.

But when we look below the lid, a very different picture emerges.
