being threatened. The victim explained that a few weeks earlier, he had been hanging

out with a group of drinking buddies at poor bills pub and Maramaq, and they started

talking about placing bets. The victim told his drinking buddies that he knew just the

right man to get them some action on placing bets for basketball and hockey matches, a

man named Alan Murphy. Murphy, the victim told the police, was a 30-year-old college-educated

lab tech at St. Joseph's Hospital, who ran a side hustle as a bookie. Every evening,

Murphy would plant himself by the phone and start taking bets on sporting events.

The drinking buddies all wanted in, so the victim made a call to place bets for them with

Murphy. A few days later, the victim placed a second round of bets for the same group

of drinking buddies. Two of those buddies lost a substantial amount of money, around

$3,000, on those bets. In order to try and recoup these losses, the two men who had lost
