Summary

There is no shortage of coverage on the infamous Jack the Ripper, but it wasn't until recently that historians began to wonder about his victims. While some great work has been done to identify them and honor their memory, it's impossible to know how many and who they really were.

"Strange and Unexplained" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab & Three Goose Entertainment and is a journey into the uncomfortable and the unknowable that will leave you both laughing and sleeping with the lights on. You can get early and ad-free episodes on the Grab Bag Patreon page.

A quick warning before we jump in. This episode is about one of the most notorious serial killers

in history and thus has some upsetting and graphic content. Please don't be like the woman who

complained that the musical six should have come with a trigger warning. When a story has been told so many times that it has become a part of the fabric of history,

0:48.3

that most of the adult bodies found belonged to women who'd been forced into sex work because

been pretty dreadful, with disease and violence being very common. This is where crossbones

comes in. Due to their sinful profession, they were excluded from Christian burial,

1:13.4

and so were interred in the unconsecrated burial ground at Crossbones, known then as St. Savior's

1:19.8

burial ground. It became a graveyard for all those who were deemed unworthy of a decent burial

1:25.9

or simply could not afford it, the forgotten

1:28.6

and the outcast, end quote.

1:31.5

The victims in today's story were also treated with this kind of disregard for more than a

1:36.5

century. Indeed, their suspected murderer has received more thought, attention, and consideration

1:42.2

than they ever did. To this day, Jack the Ripper only has five official victims,

1:48.1

most of whom were generally not graced with a name when the story has been told.
