We talked with Don Johnson, one of the first detectives on the case, and with Peter Kelly,

a close friend of Father Coons, who also produced a radio show with him. In this bonus episode,

Mitch and I started off by talking a little bit about Father Coons himself.

Father Coons is a really complicated guy. Can you talk about some of the contradictions surrounding him?

I think that just like any person, you know, there's good and bad in everyone,

and some people are going to agree with you, and some people aren't going to agree with you.

And Peter has said to me several times, like, I think an inclination of people familiar with the

story, people who knew Father Coons, is to try to make him a martyr, right?

He was this wonderful saintly guy who was kind of bucking the traditional, well, he was upholding

the traditional and bucking the church leadership as they tried to come into the modern age,

and, you know, that's why he was murdered but I

think it really is more complicated than that and I think that's why it was such a

tough case to solve I mean people either loved him or hated him there was not a

lot of middle ground with the way people felt about Father Coon's.

How important to the series was the existence of this cache of tapes from Father Coons' radio show?

One of the things that convinced me that this was the story I needed to tell for the third season
