In yesterday's chapter, Peter reminded his audience, the prophets who wrote the scriptures

are trustworthy.

In fact, Peter taught no prophecy of scripture comes from the prophet's own interpretation,

because no prophecy ever came by the will of man.

Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Prophecies in the scriptures are true and are from God.

But in 2 Peter 2, Peter warns Christians of prophets who are intentionally deceitful,

false teachers, attempting to sway them away from faith.

Peter paints a picture of the danger of these false teachers by layering several Old Testament references that teach God's wrath for those who reject him and his grace that covers those who cling to him.

For Peter's audience, this chapter serves as a warning and as hope,

warning them against falling prey to false gospels, but hope to those who persevere. Jesus

warned about false prophets in Matthew 7.15. He said, be on your guard against false prophets
