Summary

THE SEQUEL IS HERE! 13 years ago, "Born to Run" was released and captivated the running (and non-running) world. Now author Chris McDougall has partnered with coach Eric Orton to write BORN TO RUN 2: The Ultimate Training Guide, the follow-up, fully illustrated companion. Chris and Eric join the show today to talk about some of the stories and anecdotes in the book, finding the joy in running, and why community is one of the most important things for all runners

  • How to refocus on finding the enjoyment in running, even when you're chasing goals
  • The Roman Legions & "all day pace"
  • "100 Ups" and the story of a pharmacist who became a running star by running in place at his job
  • Good running form - what do we mean?

CHRISTOPHER McDOUGALL covered wars in Rwanda and Angola as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press before writing his best-selling book Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led to his next works, Running with Sherman and Natural Born Heroes, and his Outside magazine web series, “Art of the Hero.” He lives in Hawaii with his family.

ERIC ORTON’s experiences with the Tarahumara and his study of running, human performance, strength, and conditioning have led him to the cutting edge of the sport and made him a go-to for athletes everywhere. The author of The Cool Impossible and former fitness director for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Orton personally trains athletes from recreational racers to elite ultramarathoners. He lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Welcome to the Running Explain podcast. I'm Elizabeth, a marathoner, running coach, and answer seeker.

0:06.9

When I became a new runner at the age of 29, I had so many questions, but it felt like I was on my own to figure all of the answers.

0:15.1

So now I'm here to answer all your running questions to help make you a better, smarter, faster, runner. There's no question

0:22.9

too simple and no topic too complex. So let's get started. My guests this week, yes, plural

0:30.8

guests are Christopher McDougall and Eric Orton, co-authors of the new book Born to Run too.

0:44.1

If you have been a runner at all in the last 15 years or so, you've probably heard of and have likely read Born to Run, which Chris wrote way back in 2009 and was partially fully

0:52.3

credited with kickstarting the barefoot running craze, which swept us all way back then.

0:59.5

But they have written a new book.

1:01.4

They have written Born to Run to a Training Guide, of course, sprinkled with stories, anecdotes, illustrations of what they're trying to express, explain, and communicate to us

1:12.9

about just the joy of running. Because, of course, as Chris and Eric will say, we are all born

1:18.5

to run. So Chris is an author and a runner. Eric is a coach and a runner. And they have collaborated

1:24.6

on this book. And so this is a really fun conversation. I've never had two

1:27.8

guests on the show at the same time before, which was required. A bit of a shift in my part,

1:35.3

my typical ask open-ended questions that sound like statements and just wait for the other person

1:40.0

to respond. It doesn't work so well when you have two guests, but I really loved talking to them.

1:46.1

This is a great conversation. If you haven't read the first book, it's highly worth the read.

1:51.3

The second book is not only highly interesting, but it's also beautifully photographed and

1:55.7

illustrated. So here you go, born to run the sequel.

2:04.6

Well, So here you go, Born to Run, the sequel. Welcome to the show, Christopher McDougal and Eric Orton, authors of the new book, Born to Run, too.
