Summary

After a century of weak rulers and a divided family, the omens looked bad for James I: his uncle, Albany, was in charge of Scotland while he was just a child in an English prison. However, James would prove a more forceful character than his recent predecessors and was determined to assert himself over his rivals in Scotland. Since we did Robert the Bruce, we've had something of a pattern of weak kings.

Basically the last hundred years has just been weak kings struggling to establish their authority in opposition to increasingly independent nobles who are kind of running the show.

So we had David II who spent time exiled in France, then imprisoned in England.

He was really annoying.

Then we had Robert II who secures the new Stuart dynasty, but he's quite old when he starts off he gets

reduced to a figurehead by his sons while the Northern and Southern Lords just kind of do what they want and decide
