My name is Tiffany and I want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through the Bible chronologically.

My name is Tiffany and today we come to some chapters that mark a great shift in the life of Israel.

Today, Israel asks for a king. This will have great implications as we move forward in the plan of redemption.

And we will be continually reminded of our need for a perfect and righteous king that will only be satisfied in Jesus.

We begin today with 1st Samuel chapter 8 as a time marker.

1st one says when Samuel grew old.

This lets us know that a great deal of time has passed since Samuel's calling and the victory at Mizpah we read about yesterday.

In his old age, Samuel appointed his two sons as judges.

There were two problems with this. First, God was the one who raised up judges, not Samuel.

And second, Samuel's sons were wicked. Samuel's sons became the last straw for the elders of Israel and pushed them toward asking what their rebellious hearts already wanted.

The elders desired a king in order to look like other nations. They had the greatest king imaginable, God Almighty.

Yet they wanted to be like the nations surrounding them. Samuel knew this was wrong and he appealed to God because the people wanted a king that would seemingly make them happy and fit their agenda.

God had planned that an earthly king would rule Israel one day.

We know this because of the royal line of Judah blessed by Jacob in Genesis 49.

We also read the statutes God gave Moses concerning the appointment of a king in Deuteronomy 17.

But the king was always meant to be chosen by God, not the people.

Israel perceived that the grass was greener in these other nations that were ruled by an earthly king.

But God used Samuel to give the people a reality check. If they have a king, he will take their men into battle.

He will take people to be his servants and harvest his pastures and vineyards, and he will text them.
