My name is Tiffany, and I want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through the Bible chronologically.

Together, we will explore God's sovereign plan as the events of Scripture unfold and point to Jesus.

Hey, you're in the Bible family, Tiffany here, and our journey through First Kings continues today.

Ahab is still on the throne of Israel, and yesterday we ended with Elijah hearing the Lord's voice in a soft whisper.

We didn't quite make it to the specific instructions God gave Elijah, so I want to take just a moment to outline his three objectives.

God tells Elijah he will anoint Isaiah, King over Aaron.

He will anoint Jehu, King over Israel, and he will anoint Elisha as prophet in Elijah's place.

On his journey back from Mount Horib, Elijah found Elisha, who leaves behind his home and family to serve with Elijah.

Now, we might think that with one item checked off the list, Elijah would then make his way to anoint either Isaiah or Jehu.

But we've learned over the course of this year that isn't how the Lord works.

He works in his time and for his purpose.

Elijah isn't part of most of the events that take place in our chapters today.

It will be over a year before he appears in front of King Ahab again.

As we study First Kings 20 and 21, it's helpful for us to remember the overarching themes found in the Book of Kings.

Otherwise, these chapters can feel simply like story time with no real connection to the story of redemption.

So let's think back to our first day in First Kings and remember some of these themes, which we will see throughout the events of these two chapters today.

Themes that remind us that the earth and everything that happens within it belongs to the Lord.

We want to notice that God is in complete control of all events.

God is the only true God.

God keeps His promises and there are consequences for sin.
