Tiffany here and today we study a rather well-known prophet, Elijah.

But while the story of his life might be somewhat familiar, there is still much for us to learn today.

If you remember from our time yesterday, the Northern Kingdom of Israel had one bad king after another.

We ended our time with King Ahab on the throne.

He did more evil in the side of the Lord than any king before him, and his equally evil wife, Jezebel, ruled with him.

It was during Ahab's dark reign that God raised up Elijah as a prophet.

Today, we will learn from him the importance of fervent prayer, steadfast faith, boldness to speak the truth, and seeking comfort from the Lord.

A lot happens in 1 Kings 17-19, and when we boil down the overarching topic of today's chapters, it can be summed up as God vs. Bale.

Now, hopefully we know that there is no contest. God is the obvious victor.

But for the Israelites who had chosen to worship Bale under the influence of King Ahab, they genuinely thought Bale was a living, breathing God who heard their prayers and worship.

Bale was the God of reign and fertility, specifically the fertile growth of crops and animals.

People sacrificed to him in order to bless their land and livestock.

It was into this reign of pagan worship that God raised up Elijah as his prophet.

Elijah's name means Yahweh is God.

Elijah stood before King Ahab declaring with his very name that Yahweh is the one true God, and he proceeded to prove it as he announced there would be three years of no reign.

Bale was known as the God of reign, and God Almighty now proved who had true power over all creation.

The three years would be long, and Elijah would depend on the Lord's protection and provision even as the Lord taught Israel a lesson.
